Superb Shock Load Tolerance
Biofilm is physically protected inside the carrier — a hydraulic or organic surge cannot wash the biomass out the way it can in suspended-growth systems.
MBBR is a continuous-flow biological process where the biomass lives as a protected biofilm on free-moving plastic carriers instead of floating in the mixed liquor. No sludge recirculation, no dependence on settling characteristics, and outstanding tolerance to shock loads — the pragmatic, low-OPEX choice for buildings with simple operating teams.

How it works
MBBR carriers are 10–25 mm polyethylene elements with a specific gravity of ~0.95, carrying 500–800 m²/m³ of protected surface area (up to 1,200–1,600 m²/m³ for high-surface variants). Filled to 50–67% of reactor volume and kept in motion by diffused air or mixers, they hold a dense, resilient biofilm that cannot be washed out by a hydraulic surge.
What happens · 12 hr buffer
Coarse solids are screened out and flow is equalized so the biofilm reactors see a steady hydraulic and organic load.
Why it matters
Continuous-flow biology performs best on a flat load curve — the EQ tank does that job.

Why MBBR?
Engineering advantages that show up in your compliance record, your energy bill and your maintenance calendar.
Biofilm is physically protected inside the carrier — a hydraulic or organic surge cannot wash the biomass out the way it can in suspended-growth systems.
Attached-growth bacteria handle BOD and nitrification biologically. No coagulant, no flocculant, no chlorine in the process line.
0.25–0.7 kWh/KL across the range — the leanest running cost of any powered Green STP technology in the portfolio.
No sludge recirculation pumps, no batch valves, no decanters. Fewer moving parts means fewer failure points and a shorter operator learning curve.
1.0–2.5 m²/KLD footprint. Retrofits neatly into an existing aeration tank — an easy upgrade path for underperforming legacy plants.
Long biofilm solids retention time means less waste sludge to handle, store and dispose of — lower desludging frequency and cost.
Carriers are rated for 15+ years of continuous service with no replacement schedule and no consumable spend.
Adding carrier fill (within the 50–67% band) raises treatment capacity without adding a single tank — future-proofing at minimal cost.
Performance guarantee
Every installation is validated by an independent NABL-accredited laboratory. Three consecutive daily samples at full load, compared against the guarantee, before handover.

| Total Nitrogen (mg/L) | 40–70 | 15–25 | ≤10 (emerging) | Requires dedicated anoxic zone |
| Fecal Coliform (MPN/100mL) | 10⁶ – 10⁸ | <100 | <100 | UV disinfection standard |
| Phosphorus | 5–15 | Chemical dosing needed | Site-specific | Not a biological-P process |
MBBR guarantees assume domestic sewage within the design basis and include the secondary clarifier, media-retention screens and UV. Where BOD <10 mg/L and TSS <20 mg/L are contractually required, Sarvo supplies MBBR with a tertiary filter package or recommends SBR/MBR instead.
Reuse applications: Toilet flushing and landscape irrigation with tertiary filtration · Floor and vehicle washing · Dust suppression · Construction curing. Add sand + carbon filtration where TSS <10 mg/L is required.
